Impact From the Upcoming Deadline
If you own or manage an elevator installed or modernized prior to 2005 there is a good chance your elevator will not meet the upcoming code change that comes into effect on December 31st 2023.
There was a recent update to the Florida building code that effects over 80,000 elevators across Florida. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code A17.3 refers to elevator standards & compliance, including provision 3.10.12 that states: An elevator car will not move while the cab doors are open. This is a significant safety feature that provides greater protection to passengers and greatly reduces liabilities to elevator owners.
If your elevator is not currently in compliance with this code change you must have the required updates completed by the deadline, or you will not be able to obtain a passing annual license from the state of Florida.
Does my elevator have door lock monitoring or not?
The general rule of thumb is that if your elevator was installed or modernized prior to October 2005 there is a good possibility your elevator does not comply. As always there are a few exceptions to this, and we highly recommend calling us to further discuss your equipment. We have seen varying situations where elevators that should have had this feature installed did not as well as some elevators earlier having it included even though it was not a code requirement at the time of installation.

A door lock monitor device can easily be added to your existing elevator. Typically, this can be done in a few days and is a relatively low impact repair to your build. The door lock device does not impact the reliability of your elevator and is simply there to monitor the elevator's door locks and prevent it from operating with the doors opened. If you should happen to have an elevator that has reliability issues it is possible that you should consider additional upgrades to further improve the elevators operations.
This upgrade must be completed by December 31st of 2023. Typically, we can install this upgrade in only a few days, but we recommend addressing this issue as quickly as possible. Material lead times and scheduling typically takes a few weeks to coordinate.
